We have upwards of 5 to 6 inches of snow on the ground right now, and I do have to admit it… I am loving it! We haven’t had a big snow like this yet, and I was literally begging mother nature to bring some serious white powder! And she answered! Days like this are pretty fun, with all the sledding, snow angel making, and tasty snow cream. I spent some time out and about with my dad today, slipping and sliding around town, and then came home to Amberleigh dressed head to toe, ready to play in the snow with our two snow loving pups.
While today was SO fun, this winter season has been kind of… well, blah. I guess winter is truly only fun when there’s inches of snow on the ground. I can remember vividly a few years where winter was really rough for me. I was always down, had no motivation, didn’t want to go anywhere or see anyone, and I just wasn’t myself. And I know I’m not the only one who goes through that each winter.
Winter depression is a real thing, and it has a huge effect on how you live your life during these few frigid months. It’s like once winter hits, our moods fall as quickly as the temperatures. Sometimes, not even an entire pot of coffee seems like enough to pull me out of bed. And once those winter blues hit, you’ve got to get up, get going, and do something to counteract that! Otherwise, you could be stuck in this awful rut for the entire winter season!
I’ve compiled a list of 5 things you can do that will have a huge impact on ridding yourself of the winter blue’s! Keep reading to check them out.
You can also find outfit details at the end of this post!
- Get Moving!
I know this one seems like a no brainer, but it’s important, and often over looked! Get up, throw on some workout leggings, and get your endorphins pumping! Some of my favorite winter workouts are kickboxing videos, hip-hop cardio, and treadmill intervals while watching my favorite Netflix show.
- Brighten Up!
Winter is so dark. The sun sets early, and rises late, and it feels like we’re constantly struggling to find the sun! Replace all the blown light bulbs in your home, replace your dark curtains, with semi-sheer light ones. Open your blinds, or put an extra lamp in the room you find yourself in most. It is said that spending 30-minutes next to an artificial light can be super effective in ridding yourself of winter depression.
- Eat Well!
What you put in your body has a direct impact on your mood and overall health. If the winter blue’s have you on the couch mindlessly eating cookies and chips, throw them out. Replace them with healthier snacks, that satisfy your cravings, but still help with lightening your mood. Dark chocolate is excellent way to boost your endorphins, and has other great benefits for your health (when eaten in moderation of course)! Be sure you’re eating plenty of colors, and you might even consider incorporating adaptogens into your diet! Not sure what that is? Give it a google!
- Crank Up The Music!
Turning on some feel good tunes makes all the difference! I love Google Play Music because it recommends stations based on your mood, current activity, time of day, or season! Pandora also has some great feel-good stations. Or just throw on your favorite record, and get to dancing.
- Play Hard!
Have some fun! Get out, head to a friends house, and play board games into the night. Romp in the snow with your kids (or fur-children), have a snow ball fight, do some donuts in an empty parking lot. JUST HAVE FUN! If retail therapy is your thing, have a girls day and tear up the mall.
You have ALL the power to change your mood and attitude, so dwelling on this dreadful season (that does happen to come every year), won’t change a thing. You’ve got to take proactive steps to prevent and reverse those negative feelings that come along with the dropping temperatures.
